It’s September and for many kids it’s back to school. Parents and children can easily use this time to make sure they keep their teeth and oral health in tip top shape.  Below are some back to school dental tips and ideas to help keep your teeth healthy!

  1. Be sure to continue to brush your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes each time, once in the morning and once prior to bedtime
  2. Floss daily to remove stubborn food plaque and bacteria between your teeth, preferably just prior to bedtime
  3. For those who are in orthodontic (braces) treatment, pack a spare toothbrush in your backpack. After your school lunch, try to brush your teeth in the school bathroom, even if it’s for a minute and you don’t have toothpaste. Brush your teeth and braces and brackets gently with water to help prevent plaque and bacteria from building up.
  4. If your dentist or orthodontist has you wearing an orthodontic retainer during the day, it’s fairly common to accidentally throw away the retainer when eating lunch.  Here’s another great back to school dental tips: Bring a small plastic container and keep it in your backpack or locker.  Have the retainer in the plastic container prior to lunch, and don’t take it out until lunch is done.
  5. Eat healthy snacks, such as vegetable sticks (ie. celery, carrot). Instead of sugary processed snacks in the vending machines, bring an apple, banana, or orange.
  6. Drink plain low fat milk instead of chocolate milk which often contains added sugar. Milk is high in calcium and vitamin D, great for your teeth and bones!
  7. Visit your family dentist every 6 months for checkups and dental cleanings. Prevention by detecting cavities and gum disease in its early stage is easier to treat and cheaper in the long run. For those students with have half days of school in the morning, those afternoons are great and popular time to visit the dentist.

If you have any questions on any of the back to school dental tips listed above, be sure to ask your family dentist in Bellevue.
